In an effort to provide quality service while minimizing the impact of your daily operations, the Elizabeth Fire Protection District is continuing to implement the self-inspection program. We have determined that many of our local business owners and managers have a significant interest in fire safety within their businesses. Because of our positive experiences, we are now allowing low hazard businesses in the area to perform their own self-inspections. We feel that this new program will eliminate interruptions in your daily operations and increase our efficiency here at the fire department. Although a firefighter may not visit you this year, we are still committed to making your business as safe as possible. Please take a few minutes at your convenience to review and complete the attached form and return it to us so that our records are complete. Many of the common corrections have been addressed in the included self-inspection form. This form should be used as a tool for performing your self-inspection.

Remember, it is essential for us to verify that our community is safe. These self-inspections will provide us with information to help us attain our goal. If you would like the fire department to inspect your business, please call us and we will schedule an inspection with our firefighters.

1. Is your address or unit number visible from the street, and do the numbers contrast with their background?

2. Are all exterior trash containers (dumpsters) located at least five feet away from the building, and are the lids kept closed?

5. If illuminated EXIT signs are provided, are they in working condition? There is a battery test button on the exterior of the exit sign.

6. Are circuit breakers panels unobstructed with a minimum of 36” of clearance provided?

7. Are all cover plates in place on electrical outlets and switches within your space(s)?

8. Are extension cords used?

Have you removed and replaced them with an electrical outlet to support the electrical device? Extension cords are for temporary use only.

9. Are multi-plug adapters in use?

Please remove and replace them with an approved “breaker” multi-plug unit with a fuse.

10. Are mechanical, boiler, and furnace rooms in your space(s) free of any combustible storage and materials?

11. Storage shall be located no less 18” below sprinkler head (if any) or 24” below the ceiling. Does your room meet this provision?

12. Have fire extinguishers been inspected and serviced within the last year by a licensed company? Is the extinguisher(s) marked so by a proper tag?
